Special treatment to Bibi Jagir Kaur in jail, a dangerous trend, says Congress

New Delhi/Kapurthala, Apr 3 (ANI): Congress party on Tuesday criticized the special treatment provided to the tainted state minister Bibi Jagir Kaur in prison, where she is serving a five year sentence.

Speaking to mediapersons in New Delhi, Punjab Congress party in-charge Gulchain Singh Charak said that to give one prisoner special preference over the others was setting dangerous trends.

"This is very wrong and its consequences could be very severe. If the court has sentenced someone to prison after being convicted of some charges, then that convict should be treated in the same way as the other prisoners. To give one prisoner special treatment when she has been convicted of the same crimes as other prisoners is wrong," said Charak.

He also slammed the state ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government for facilitating such luxuries for Jagir Kaur.

"If any political party or any government has supported this incident then it would be prove to have serious repercussions in the future and the law of the land would be demolished. I think this special treatment is wrong and if she has been sentenced, then it should be ensured that she serves that sentence as a common prisoner," Charak added.

Media reports on Monday reported that jail authorities had permitted the installation of a LED screen and satellite connection for Kaur in the prison.

A special court on March 30 convicted Bibi Jagir Kaur for conspiring in forcible abduction, kidnapping and wrongful confinement in the killing of her daughter Harpreet Kaur.

Jagir Kaur was however acquitted from the charges of murder by the court in Patiala.

Harpreet Kaur had died under mysterious circumstanced during the intervening night of April 20 and 21, 2000 en route from Phagwara to Ludhiana's Christian Medical College Hospital.

Kamaljit Singh claimed that he was her husband and father of Harpreet's stillborn child, a few days after her death. (ANI)
