Rajya Sabha adjourned till noon over uproar on Army Chief's letter to PM

New Delhi, Thu, 29 Mar 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 29 (ANI): The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon on Thursday after opposition parties disrupted proceedings over a demand for answers on the controversy surrounding Army Chief General V.K Singh 's March 12 letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Upper House witnessed uproarious protests from the opposition benches over the media leak of the contents of a secret letter that was not meant for public consumption, forcing Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari to adjourn proceedings till 12 p.m.

According to reports, the army chief's letter, sent to the Prime Minister's Office on March 12, has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take suitable steps to enhance the preparedness of the country's army services.

He has claimed that the army's tanks are "devoid of critical ammunition to defeat enemy tanks" and air defence is "97 percent obsolete and it doesn't give the deemed confidence to protect...from the air."

General Singh and Defence Minister Antony are already faced with a crisis with the former disclosing on Monday that he was offered a 14-crore bribe in 2010 to clear 600 sub-standard trucks for the army in August-September 2010. (ANI)
