New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) Even as Sri Lanka blew hot and cold, India Saturday justified its vote against Colombo in Geneva over allegations of human rights abuses in the war on Tamil Tigers.
At the same time, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote to President Mahinda Rajapaksa explaining why New Delhi acted the way it did.
An official sources said the Sri Lankan leadership had made many promises over issues of devolution of power to the Tamil minority but little had actually happened.
"Many promises were made but very little has been done," a source said.
"The rehabilitation process has proceeded well, in fact better than in countries like Cambodia.
"But the political process is not happening. The devolution (of power) is not moving forward," the source said.
"We voted because this echoes the thrust of the Indian stand," the source said.
On Thursday, India and 23 other countries voted for a US-sponsored resolution that pulled up Sri Lanka over human rights abuses in the war on the Tamil Tigers that ended in 2009.
Asked if the Indian vote would impact on ties with Sri Lanka, the source said: "It shouldn't."
The sources did not agree that the UN Human Rights Council resolution would widen the divide between the Sinhalese and Tamil communities. "That won't happen."
