London, Mar 15(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that the club's record signing Dimitar Berbatov is on his way out of Old Trafford.
The 30.75 million pound forward has found it hard to break through in the first team this season, mainly due to Danny Welbeck emerging as the main strike partner of Wayne Rooney.
Last year's signing Javier Hernandez is United's third choice striker, leaving Berbatov at fourth place in the pecking order of forwards at the club.
Ferguson has now confirmed that the Bulgarian is set to leave in the summer ahead of their last-16 Europa League second leg tie with Athletic Bilbao.
"His concern is not getting first-team football. At 31, he is looking at first-team football. It is difficult for me to guarantee that, so it could lead to him looking elsewhere," The Daily Mail quoted Ferguson, as saying.
Berbatov's contract is due to expire in the summer. However, rather than let him leave for nothing at the end of the season, they will trigger a one-way clause to extend the deal for a further year.
That would mean United would get a fee for the player, who was linked with former club Bayer Leverkusen during the January transfer window.
"We will be taking up the option on his contract, but, having had chats with him, I understand he wants to get first-team football," he said.
Ferguson said Berbatov is again set to miss out on Thursday as United look to topple a 3-2 deficit from last week's home encounter.
"He could play tomorrow, but I have good options in terms of front players with Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney," he added. (ANI)
