Kiwis in trouble after dramatic five wicket for no run collapse on Day 1 of Hamilton Test

Wellington, Thu, 15 Mar 2012 ANI

Wellington, Mar 15(ANI): New Zealand suffered a dramatic collapse and lost five wickets for no runs in 20 balls to crash to 185 in 61.2 overs on the opening day of the Hamilton Test against South Africa.

It is the third time in Test cricket history that five wickets have fallen for no runs - with New Zealand 'achieving' the feat on all occasions, stuff.co.nz reports.

South Africa will resume today at 27-2, with Alviro Petersen and Hashim Amla at the crease after bowlers Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander ripped through Kiwi batting middle order.

South African captain Graeme Smith (13) was caught by wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk, off a Chris Martin delivery, and then the same duo combined in a more orthodox caught behind dismissal to dispatch Dale Steyn (4).

Black Caps lost openers Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill cheaply, but Brendon McCullum and captain Ross Taylor added 89 runs for the third wicket.

But the home side's hopes were dashed due to poor quality bowling and poor shots.

Tomorrow's play will start half an hour early at 10am.
