Cairns' match-fixing case verdict to be announced after summing up of speeches

London, Wed, 14 Mar 2012 ANI

London, Mar 14(ANI): Only after the summing up speeches will a verdict be announced in the libel case filed by former Kiwi cricketer Chris Cairns against former Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket chief Lalit Modi.

Three former Indian Cricket League (ICL) players have reiterated their earlier statements, accusing Cairns of being involved in match-fixing in the ongoing trial at the London High Court.

Former Chandigarh Lions players Gaurav Gupta, Karanveer Singh and Rajesh Sharma gave their evidences via a video link-up to the court,stuff.co.nz reports.

Former Chandigarh Lion coach Balwinder Singh Sandhu has reportedly said he suspects Cairns to be involved in match-fixing.

Cairns has sued Modi over a 2010 tweet that alleged the former had been barred from the IPL due to an involvement with match-fixing in the rival ICL.

Cairns has rejected the allegation as "wholly untrue", stuff.co.nz reports.

ICL anti-corruption officer Howard Beer said the "overall context" of the evidence he gathered during an investigation led him to believe Cairns was involved, but also described the investigation as "shambolic".

Cairns was captain of Chandigarh in the ICL, but had his contract terminated in October 2008. According to the official line, he had breached his contract for failing to disclose an injury. (ANI)
