Imam dies in Belgium mosque fire incident

London, Tue, 13 Mar 2012 ANI

London, Mar.13 (ANI): A 47-year-old imam has died while trying to extinguish flames in a mosque in Belgium that was attacked by an arsonist.

Police spokeswoman Marie Verbeck confirmed that the imam had died in the fire, but did not release his name or provide any further details.

She did, however, reveal that he is survived by four children.

"There is a lot of damage, apparently the entire mosque, or almost the entire mosque, burned down," Sky News quoted her, as saying.

Verbeck said a man carrying an axe, a can of petrol and Molotov cocktails was reportedly seen at the Shi'ite mosque in Anderlecht, a suburb of Brussels, shortly before 7 p.m. local time.

The man then broke the windows of the mosque and threw the incendiary devices inside.

She said that the person had been arrested and no one else was being sought in connection with the arson attack. (ANI)
