US army uncovers latest non-lethal weapon with Active Denial System

Washington, Mon, 12 Mar 2012 ANI

Washington, Mar 12(ANI): The United States military has unveiled its latest non-lethal weapon, which is actually an electromagnetic beam of severe heat and uses the Active Denial System (ADS).

This new weapon can be mounted on a military vehicle, and is chiefly designed for crowd control.

When the Active Denial System (ADS) is activated, it beams a high-frequency electromagnetic ray beam at a target up to one thousand meters (0.6 miles) away, creating a heat so painful to bear that the natural response is to run away.

"This is the safest non-lethal capability that we have. You're not going to see it, you're not going to hear it, and you're not going to smell it. You're going to feel it," The Daily Mail quoted Director of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, Marine Col. Tracy Tafolla, as saying.

Classed as a 'counter personnel' weapon, it is used 'to deny access into or out of an area to individuals' by firing 'an invisible electromagnetic millimeter-wave energy beam beyond small arms range' from a jeep.

Stephanie Miller, who works for the Air Force Research Laboratory said when the weapon was tested on more than 11,000 people, it only caused second-degree burns on two people. (ANI)
