No US threats to IP gas project: Khar

Islamabad, Fri, 09 Mar 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Mar 9 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has said that the US had never threatened Pakistan with sanctions over the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline.

Khar said US officials had already rebuffed the reports of threatening.

"Pakistan can never be selective as far as its energy need is concerned," the Daily Times quoted her, as saying.

On being asked about what would Pakistan's position if Iran was attacked, she said that any attack or war would be catastrophic for the region.

"And Pakistan would severely suffer, therefore, attack would neither take place nor can be allowed, it is clear," she added.

Pakistan had earlier assured Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that they would go ahead with the gas pipeline and electricity import projects despite international sanctions on Tehran.

"The President (Asif Ali Zardari) reiterated commitment for expeditious implementation of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, 1,000MW electricity transmission line and 100MW Gwadar power supply," a statement issued by the presidency said.

Islamabad had also reportedly offered 250 million dollars to a German company ILF Engineering for laying of gas pipeline inside its territory. (ANI)
