South African-born Van Wyk to debut against Proteas

Wellington, Tue, 06 Mar 2012 ANI

Wellington, Mar 6 (ANI): South African-born Kruger van Wyk will make his test debut tomorrow in Dunedin against the country he spent the first 26 years of his life.

Van Wyk will replace the injured BJ Watling who has not recovered from a hip complaint.

Captain Ross Taylor said that as new rules do not allow for runners to be used, and with Watling's fitness still under a cloud, there was little choice but to play van Wyk, reports.

"It's a lot easier to leave guys out now," said Taylor.

Since coming to New Zealand in 2006, 32-year-old van Wyk averages 52.93 with the bat. From six first-class games this season, he's scored 638 runs at an average of a shade over 91.

There will also be a re-shuffle at the top of the order with debutant Rob Nicol replacing Brendon McCullum opening the batting with Martin Guptill.

McCullum will bat three, Taylor four and Kane Williamson will drop down to No 5.

Taylor said Nicol and Guptill had formed a comfortable partnership at the top of the innings in the ODI series. (ANI)
