Delhi Govt. increases OBC quota for higher education

New Delhi, Feb 27 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday said that her government has increased the reservation in higher education for Other Backward Classes (OBC) to 27 percent this year from the previous 21 percent applicable earlier.

"The 27 percent for OBCs, which was applicable in universities and colleges last year, we reduced it to 21 percent. And we thought we would make it 27 percent, so this year it is 27 percent," she said.

The decision to increase the reservation came after a cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister here.

Meanwhile, Dikshit asserted that the government would provide a compensation of Rs. 3,00,000 to family members of the children, who had lost their lives when the wall of a multi-storeyed fell on them.

She further said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) must remain alert and take adequate steps to prevent unauthorised constructions in the city.

"Two things were done. First was, three to four children who lost their lives, we are giving their families a compensation of three hundred thousand rupees and we are extremely sorry that this happened with innocent children," said Dikshit.

"And we also feel that the cabinet unanimously felt that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi should be firm and careful than it is just now, they must see that unauthorised buildings do not come up. I mean this is dangerous, they have to be more alert and I think the builder has already been arrested," she added.

At least four children were killed when the wall of an under-construction building collapsed in South Delhi's Chattarpur extension area on Sunday. (ANI)
