Chakhesang Nagas celebrate annual festival

Dimapur, Feb 21 (ANI): The Chakhesang Nagas, one of 16 tribes of Nagaland, recently celebrated the Chakhesang Cultural Festival that highlighted their distinct identity and culture.

 

A festive mood prevailed at the Daeshin Academy playground at Diphupar 'B' village in Dimapur, Nagaland.

 

People from the Chakhesang tribe dressed in exotic headgears, costumes and ethnic ornaments, celebrated the Chakhesang Cultural Festival with enthusiasm.

 

Organised under the aegis of the Chakhesang Hoho Dimapur District (CHDD) under the theme of "cultural synergy", the event aimed at reviving age-old customs and traditional practices.

 

"Now, the younger generation forgets their own culture. So we organized (the event) to revive and to teach the youngsters," said Vekhosayi, President, CHDD.

 

The Chakhesang tribe can be found in Phek District and Pfutsero, Chozuba sub-division of Nagaland.

 

Many young boys and girls, in their traditional attire, took part in Chakhesang Folk dances and songs during the festival.

 

"At this generation we do not know much about our culture but today being a part of this festival I have learn more about our culture and bring alive the old tradition," said Zoma, a participant.

 

A large number of visitors turned up to witness the cultural extravaganza.

 

The state government also promised that more such events would be held.

 

"Naga(land) has many tribes and each tribe has own festival. With the government support and realization of important of keeping Naga identity alive and promotion of culture organizing such cultural festival is going on very strongly," said Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland.

 

Tribal fairs and festivals like these are also helping in boosting tourism and generate revenue for the state.

 

"Such festival is important to make aware of our culture and tradition. So No matter which tribe we belong but we should preserve our culture," said Azo Nienu, Minister for Health and Family Welfare. (ANI)
