Alleged terrorist Patek confesses to preparing explosives for Bali bombings

Jakarta , Mon, 20 Feb 2012 ANI

Jakarta, Feb 20(ANI): Alleged terrorist Umar Patek has admitted to preparing explosives used for the 2002 Bali bombings, but denied knowing the full extent of the plan that killed 202 people.

Patek's lawyer has informed the West Jakarta District Court that he accepts mixing the explosives used in the Bali bombings.

Patek is charged with planned mass murder for his alleged role in the Bali bombings and could be sentenced to death, if convicted.

Two nightclubs in the popular tourist area of Kuta were targeted during the bombings ten years ago.

"The defendant was only invited by Imam Samudra to come and mix the bomb material," The Herald Sun quoted Ainal, Patek's lawyer, as saying in the court.

"There is no legal argument that could prove the defendant deliberately participated in the plan to take lives. The person who carried the bombs to be exploded was Ali Imron," he said.

Samudra was executed in 2008 for his role in the Bali bombings, along with Amrozi and Ali Ghufron.

Patek is charged with premeditated mass murder for his alleged role in the Bali bombings. He could be sentenced to death if convicted

He was silent throughout the court proceedings. The trial, which will resume on February 27, is expected to last more than four months, as prosecutors present evidence from 86 witnesses. (ANI)
