New Delhi/Kanpur, Feb 16 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Part (BJP) has accused the Congress party of pretending to be at loggerheads with the Samajwadi Party (SP) in order to conceal a common motive of sharing power in Uttar Pradesh.
"We have known for years that the hostility between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress in Uttar Pradesh was a fixed match. They are different sides of the same coin," said BJP leader Balbir Punj in New Delhi.
Punj's remarks came in the wake of a statement by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav who said on Wednesday that he was willing to ally with the Congress party in order to keep the right wing BJP out of power.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said that the current election was being fought on the issue of development, and hence the SP's tactics would not earn it more votes.
"The Samajwadi Party will not be able to get the minority vote this time, as it used to earlier by provoking fear of the BJP. This election is not being fought on emotional or sentimental issues. This time the main issue is the development of Uttar Pradesh," Hussain told reporters in Kanpur.
The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.
A new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March. The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
