MHA, J and K Govt. and Jamia Milia Islamia sign MoU for construction of hostels

New Delhi, Feb 9 (ANI): A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jammu and Kashmir Government and Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi, for the construction of hostels to accommodate students from Jammu and Kashmir at Jamia Milia Islamia here today.

 

Joint Secretary (Kashmir), S. Skandan, Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Tanveer Jahan and Registrar, Jamia Milia Islamia, Professor S.M. Sajid signed the MoU in the presence of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Vice-Chairman, Jama Milia Islamia, Najeeb Jung and Union Home Secretary R. K. Singh.

 

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram speaking on the occasion congratulated Chief Minister Abdullah and Vice-Chairman of Jamia Milia Islamia for coming together for this project. He said this is a very positive for providing higher education to students of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Omar Abdullah on his part said this step will help in providing accommodation and also further integration of the students from Jammu and Kashmir.

 

This is part of the initiatives taken by the Government of India to enhance confidence-building measures for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

The proposed hostel facility will be for 400 students of Post Graduate, Graduate and School level students (separate for boys and girls) from Jammu and Kashmir. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 16.22 crores and the project is expected to be completed within 24 months from the date of commencement of work.

 

Funds will be released in installments by the Jammu and Kashmir Government to Jamia Milia Islamia. The Ministry of Home Affairs will reimburse the amount. Jamia Milia Islamia shall provide the land for the hostel within its campus.

 

It was felt that the students from the State find it difficult to get accommodation in the campus hostel and the adjoining areas. In order to overcome this problem of the students from Jammu and Kashmir, the project was envisaged.

 

After construction of hostel building, hostel facility for 400 students from J and K will be available in addition to those who obtain hostel accommodation under the regular system.

 

These 400 students from Jammu and Kashmir, to be admitted in the Hostels, will only be those students admitted to the Jamia Milia Islamia University and its affiliated Schools.

 

For purpose of a healthy and integrated development, the students from Jammu and Kashmir shall be accommodated in various hostels spread across the Jamia campus, after completion of the building. (ANI)
