BJP slams PM over dip in GDP

New Delhi, Wed, 08 Feb 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 8 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday criticized Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the ruling Congress Party for the recent dip in the country's GDP to 6.9 percent.

BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy blamed the Congress-led UPA Government for not being able to achieve the goals of the 11th Five Year Plan.

"The GDP growth rate has come down to 6.9 percent and this itself is a disaster and this is a fact, which is been reported now and less than 7 percent. The Prime Minister in all these five years has been saying that the 11th Plan would have growth rate of 9 percent," he told mediapersons here.

Pointing out that major sectors have shown a decline in growth, Rudy sought an answer from the Prime Minister for such a situation.

"He has been always saying that it is going to be 9 percent. We are seeing that manufacturing ahs come down, mining has come down, construction has come down, the industrial sector, which is approximately 20 percent of the GDP has come down, agriculture growth which had reached 7 percent has come down to 2.5 percent, so all stuck down. Will the Prime Minister answer why there is a complete fiasco on the economic front? Why has the government got into such a situation?" said Rudy.

"This would be a very categorical question to the Prime Minister of the country, for creating a situation, which is all deficit, all losses, failing investments, failing in FDI's all is visible today," he added.

The growth in GDP at factor cost during 2011-12, at 2004-05 prices, is estimated at 6.9 per cent as compared to the growth rate of 8.4 per cent in 2010-11.

At constant prices, the GDP is estimated at Rs. 5,222,027 crore and in nominal terms at Rs 8,279,976 crore.

In terms of sectoral break-up, the GDP growth is estimated at 2.5 per cent in agriculture, forestry and fishing sector, 3.9 percent in manufacturing and 9.4 percent in services sector. (ANI)
