Congress condemns BJP for sensationalizing Supreme Court 2G verdict

New Delhi, Fri, 03 Feb 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 3 (ANI): Congress has condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) attempt to politicize and sensationalize the Supreme Court verdict in the 2G scam case.

While addressing the mediapersons at a press conference here today Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: "We deprecate in the strongest possible terms the repeated attempts of BJP and other opposition parties to politicize and sensationalize the legal judgment."

He added that BJP's repeated attempts to sensationalize and politicize court judgment reflects the party's established practice to try and drag all and sundry institutions for narrow political gains.

Referring to the Supreme Court judgments in 2G scam and the petition filed by Subramaniam Swamy and Prashant Bhushan, against the Central Government, Singhvi defended Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh saying the opposition parties jumped to conclusion without perusing the court's judgment properly, which did not hold him responsible.

"The BJP has tried for over 18 months with its allies to suggest these two leagal proceedings should, must culminate in an indictment of the Prime Minister. Both the judgments has paragraphs and not sentences affirmative saying that Prime Minister is in no way, directly or indirectly responsible," said Singhvi.

The apex court on Thursday quashed 122 spectrum licences granted after January 2008, and asked the trial court to decide whether Chidambaram needs to be probed for his role in the spectrum case.

The apex court verdict was in response to Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy"s petition seeking a CBI probe into Chidambaram"s alleged role in the spectrum scam, and on two pleas filed by noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan seeking cancellation of 2G licences and the setting up of a SIT to probe the scam.

Swamy had on January 7 submitted documents seeking prosecution of Chidambaram in the case before a Delhi court.

The telecom scam, one of India's biggest graft cases ever, may have cost 39.57 billion dollars in expected revenue losses to the public exchequer as estimated in the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. (ANI)
