Indian cricketers must take blame for drubbing in Test series against Australia: Chappell

Melbourne, Mon, 30 Jan 2012 ANI

Melbourne, Jan 30(ANI): Team India players should take the blame for their 4-0 drubbing in the Test series against Australia because they simply were not having a go, former Australian captain Ian Chappell has said.

He said that India's mentor Duncan Fletcher should take only little blame because the coach's influence in the game is limited, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

His criticism comes after India's batting line-up failed to fire in the Test series, with the "big three" Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and V. V. S. Laxman, averaging less than 40.

Dravid, 39, had to dispel his retirement speculations that were stoked by India's four consecutive Test defeats.

Chappell also said the star culture rampant in Indian cricket structure had led to sloppy habits instead of promoting a work ethic.

Chappell also said that M.S. Dhoni's captaincy in Australia had failed rally the squad to perform as a single unit.

India has slid from first to third in the ICC rankings following their defeats in Test series against England and Australia. (ANI)
