'Beleaguered' Smith gets Twitter salute after scoring ODI ton against Sri Lanka

Cape Town, Mon, 23 Jan 2012 ANI

Cape Town, Jan 23(ANI): Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith was showered with praises on Twitter after he regained form and scored a century against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers.

Smith smashed his ninth ODI ton and third-best personal score as he scored 125 runs off 143 balls in the fifth and final ODI last night, Sport 24 reports.

He, alongwith captain AB De Villiers set up a formidable partnership of 312 for four, with De Villers also scoring an unbeaten 125 off 98 balls.

Smith had earlier come under fire for not showing signs of a comeback, but his fan club on Twitter made sure his comeback achievement would not go unnoticed.

"Graeme Smith take a bow! #Legend," his team-mate Dale Steyn tweeted.

"Take a bow Graeme Smith," echoed Test batsman Jacques Rudolph.

Former Proteas off-spinner Pat Symcox tweeted: "Congrats @GraemeSmith49. Love your work, man."

"And that, people, is why you don't just drop a player." SuperSport pundit and former Proteas player HD Ackerman said.

Author and investigative news journalist Mandy Wiener observed: "That's it Biff, bravo. Answer your critics. Now lose some weight and you've turned the corner."

"But seriously, getting over-excited about Smith now is like being happy when an old sports car finally starts in the morning, " a Twitter sports critic @Followthebounce tweeted.(ANI)
