Salem seeks closure of trail in 1993 bomb blast case

Mumbai, Wed, 18 Jan 2012 ANI

Mumbai, Jan 18 (ANI): Abu Salem, the prime accused in 1993 Mumbai blasts case, has sought closure of trail against him.

Salem moved a petition in a Mumbai special court after the Portugal Supreme Court upheld cancellation of his extradition to India.

Upholding the lower court's order, the Portugal Supreme Court had on Tuesday stated that its extradition treaty with India was violated in relation to the Abu Salem case.

The Portugal high court had earlier in its order on September 20, 2011 terminated the government's authorisation of extraditing of Abu Salem to India in November 2005.

In response to the news the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) spokesperson informed that Salem's trail would remain unaffected in India.

It is also expected that the CBI will appeal to the constitutional court of Portugal against the Supreme Court order.

The Portuguese court has accused the Indian agencies of violating the conditions under which Salem was permitted to be taken to India in November 2005 to face trial.

The high court had earlier argued that rules were violated as the new/additional charges against Salem entailed the death penalty clause, which refutes the extradition rules of Europe. (ANI)
