Farmers protest power shortage in Aurangabad

Aurangabad , Thu, 02 Dec 2010 ANI

Aurangabad, Dec.2 (ANI): Farmers in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district protested the sudden cut in the power supply and demanded electricity supply to protect their crops from drying up, as they are unable to pump water from bore wells.

"Electricity is a big problem in Maharashtra. The Viz electricity company is cutting down the supply of the farmers. The farmers sowed wheat and vegetables in large quantity but the electricity supply company cut down the power supply of the farmers. The farmers are facing big losses," said Vilas Pawar, Aurangabad Farmer's Association head.

The farmers demanded that the power supply should be resumed, as they do not have sufficient money to buy diesel to draw water from the bore wells.

"Due to shortage in power supply, our vegetables are drying up. We do not have money to draw water from the bore well. So, we request the government that we should be given sufficient electricity," said Nand Kishor Ahire, a farmer.

The farmers have also planned to demonstrate outside the state assembly house against the irregular power supply. By Abdul Hadi (ANI)
