New Delhi/Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), Sep. 27 (ANI): Former Indian cricket team captain and Member of Parliament Mohammad Azharuddin said here on Monday that he has sought a flood relief package from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his flood-affected constituency, Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Incessant rains over the last few weeks have inundated a number of villages in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Moradabad.

Floodwaters inundated residential areas and several road links as well as expansive stretches of agricultural lands have been washed away, causing massive losses.

"I have met the PM. I have asked him to give a very big package for Moradabad, because I think that the people have really suffered, especially the farmers. They have also lost their houses. Some people, they don't even have place to live. And I think the water levels have been very high. At some places, the water was flowing at about six feet or something, and I think the crops have also been destroyed, and I have also asked the PM to give the relief to pay back the bank loans and electricity bills of the farmers, whom I don't think would simply be able to pay because of all the devastation that has happened in Moradabad," said Azharuddin after meeting Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Azharuddin said hat the Prime Minister has assured him to look into the matter.

"He (Dr.Manmohan Singh) said that he will look into it, then he will come out with a positive response, and I think since the Prime Minister is a very positive person. So, I am hoping for a very positive response and hoping that the package will be sent very quickly," added Azharuddin.

Hundreds of villages have been inundated in Bijnor and Moradabad districts of the State due to floods and seven trains have been cancelled in the region as well. (ANI)
