Job flexibility helps out a healthy lifestyle: Study

Dec 15:  With the pace of development in professional as well as personal life it is really turning hard for many of us to maintain a proper balance with the work and personal life leading to various psychological and health related complications. A recent scientific study proves that a flexible work schedule makes it easier for the employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Researchers from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in their study observed many workers and came to the conclusion that less stiffness in workplace schedule is not only improves the morale of employees but also to maintain a healthy life thereby improving overall productivity.

Earlier it is believed that workplace flexibility is important for the betterment of work but the recent research added another benefit of improved worker lifestyle habits.

Study led by Dr. Grzywacz examined data’s from Health Risk Appraisals (HRAs) of a large multinational pharmaceutical company. These datas’ include workers with different echelon of jobs and not just high official posts. The researchers observed lifestyle behaviour of workers irrespective of job hierarchy and also noticed changes in behaviour with the change in amount of flexibility in a one year period.

The study took in to account the amount of physical activity, company sponsored health management programme, and sleeping habits that are directly proportional to a flex schedule as it allows a better control on their health and everyday’s life schedule.

"The result suggests that flexibility programmes that are situated within a broader organisational commitment to employee health may be useful for promoting positive lifestyle habits," Grzywacz said.

Earlier study had proved that a high working life schedule with much stress and less sleep eventually lead to psychological distress and various diseases. As a result it affects the entire health of workplace health. Individual with a loosen work culture develops a sense of positive lifestyle.

Healthy lifestyle is no longer confined to individual level and it is now one of the important parts of workability of employee. Hence there is need of an extensive research on the work culture and employee oriented health model that every organisation should follow for the promotion of a healthier lifestyle, which in turn would help them in improving maximum productivity with less absenteeism due to illness.
