Nov 30: AIDS in our country is horrible in the way it is stigmatised and perceived. The infected person submits himself to the atrocities of society which keep several things handy to ill treat such people. In a country where poverty and illiteracy are rampant dealing with HIV/AIDS is a daunting challenge ahead.
Here is a concerted effort by the eminent film makers who took the less treaded path. AIDS Jaago is a series of four movies that is about losing the blind beliefs associated with AIDS/HIV in which stalwarts like Mira Nair, Vishal Bhardwaj, Farhan Akhtar and Santosh Sivan directed films are clubbed together to give a essence that underscore different aspects of the HIV pandemic.
The series AIDS Jaago, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation promises its viewers an exhilarating experiences.
Vishal in his movie Blood Brothers with his mesmerising strokes of sensitivity had able to combine the pain and agony of a person who started believing erroneously that he is HIV+, as he shares the same name with the person who was diagnosed with HIV+.
The short movie of 13 minutes shown in a sense of suspense in which a young man is shown following an older man.
Life takes a murky turn for the person (Siddharth) who left his family and started living his life as a pauper, one fine day he met an accident, rescued and was tested for HIV+. The reports stunned him as it confirmed that he was not an HIV+ person, he makes an emotional comeback to his home.
He went to the lab where he got his report and find the other person with similar name, he started following him and asked the other person who seems to be content with his life, that if he is aware of the fact that he is HIV+. The other person replies in positive manner that he is very much aware that he is HIV+ but clarified he is not an AIDS patient.
Here lies the crux of the movies where the person with HIV+ goes on explaining the difference between being HIV+ and AIDS.
Siddharth of Rang De Basanti fame, Aysha Takia, Pankaj Kapur had added all that extra dynamism which spins around the life of an HIV+ person and the upshot in his life.
Prarambh from Santosh Sivam is reeled around a truck driver who discovered an escapee boy in his vehicle. One of the best in the series as claimed by Vishal Bhardwaj where the driver takes the onus to get the boy into a school as the boy was exorcised from school as he was suspected to be HIV+. This movie is so naturally splendored that for sure will captivate the viewers mind. Actors like Prabhu Deva and B.Saroja Devi have fit to their respective character.
Mira Nair’s slice Migration tells the plight of migrant workers who has an affair with the wife of clandestine homosexual. Corollary of the movie is that the migrant worker’s wife and newborn child back in his village test positive for HIV.
Farhan Akhtar’s Positive revolves around a relationship between son and his father who is an HIV+ person. His infuriated son returns at her mother’s behest to be his terminally ill father.
