Amendment to existing law suggested to prevent Bhopal like judgment

Nagpur, June 10 (ANI): Gopal Subramaniam, Solicitor General of India has said that the government must institute strict legislations to prevent repetition of disaster like Bhopal gas tragedy.

 

Speaking at a function here on Wednesday, Subramaniam, said: "This case is a test case which any government should study and should make it a base for research for making positive amendments in the law so that in future incidents like this do not take place, such questions are not raised. An introspection in this regard is required."

 

The verdict that took 25 years for a decision has failed the expectations of the victims.We should clearly incorporate in the law as to what action will be taken if such multiple safety certification process are disobeyed or breached," he said.

 

On Monday, a District Magistrate's Court in Bhopal had convicted all eight accused on grounds of negligence under Section 304 (a) for the tragedy.

 

The court also granted bail to seven of the eight accused and released them on submission of a bond and a surety of Rs 25,000 each.

 

The eight accused are Keshub Mahendra, Vijay Gokhle, Kishore Kamdar, J Mukund, S P Choudhary, K V Shetty and S I Qureshi and R B Roy Choudhary.

 

Out of the accused R B Roy Choudhary, then former Assistant Works Manager Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL), Mumbai, died during the trial.

 

Warren Anderson, the chairman of Union Carbide Worldwide, has been designated as absconder. (ANI)
