CBI team arrives at Gandhinagar to investigate Sohrabuddin encounter

Gandhinagar, Wed, 03 Feb 2010 ANI

Gandhinagar, Feb 3 (ANI): A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived here on Wednesday to probe into the alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and disappearance of his wife Kausarbi.

It was alleged that Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausarbi were killed in 2005.

Earlier this week the special crime branch of CBI had registered a case in this regard.

The team that has arrived here would take over the case material from the Gujarat Crime Investigation Department (CID).

The Gujarat CID had filed a chargesheet against 14 police officials including suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) D G Vanzara and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers-Rajkumar Pandyan and M N Dinesh.

The Gujarat police argued that Sohrabuddin was involved in a conspiracy to kill State Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The CBI took up the case on directions of the Supreme Court which came down heavily on the Gujarat Government for failing to conduct impartial investigations and attempting to mislead the court by filing conflicting action taken reports (ATRs).

Earlier, the apex court had asked the CBI to probe if there was any larger conspiracy to the killings and submit the report within six months for its perusal. (ANI)
