Kanpur, Sat, 03 Oct 2009 ANI

Kanpur (UP), Oct 3 (ANI): On the occasion of the 140th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the lawmakers and leaders of the Congress party visited Dalit homes across Uttar Pradesh on Friday evening and even shared food taking inspiration from their leader Rahul Gandhi.

The purpose behind the initiative was to win the confidence of Dalit sections.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Prakash Jaiswal along with his fellow workers landed in a Dalit-dominated slum area in Kanpur.

They distributed food to all the poor Dalit people and later had the same food while sitting amid them on the ground.

Jaiswal claimed that Congress is genuinely working for the welfare of Dalits.

"The history of this country itself will show whether Congress is faking its support to Dalits or is genuinely supporting them. You can see the history of 100 years that who have actually worked for the benefit of Dalits.

Today every political party talks about the welfare of Dalits because they know they cannot do without their votes. But congress actually worked for the welfare and upliftment of Dalits by giving them a certain percentage of reservation," Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, in Topalpur village of Moradabad district, cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin visited a Dalit home and spent time with the family by having dinner with them.

"I came here earlier also during the election campaign but today I am quite elated to visit the place again because this time I even had the food," said Azharuddin.

Rahul Gandhi had recently visited many villages in the state and spent nights with the Dalits. (ANI)
