Guwahati, Aug.19 (ANI): The popularity of football in the north-eastern parts of the country is well-known, especially when one finds so many national players emerging from these states. But of late an increasing number of girls are also taking to this sport, especially in Assam.

Many Assamese girls are taking to football as a career option.

Also, several initiatives have been taken up to build up a platform for aspiring women footballers of the state.

In such an effort, Assam Football Association in collaboration with Jorhat West Sports Association recently organized the 13th Edition of All Assam Inter District Senior Women's Football Championship in Jorhat.

Altogether, 10 teams from various districts of Assam participated in the tournament, which provided an opportunity for the players to showcase their talent and get recognition at the national level.

"The Assam Inter District Senior Women's Football tournament in Jorhat district is being organised here. When Jorhat football Association got the knowledge about the tournament, we decided to participate as it will be good for the sportsperson. There are many sports enthusiasts in Jorhat and it is a good platform for them," said Nani Dutta, President, Jorhat West Sports Association.

"I want to become a good player. I want to play for team India. I am trying my best to become an excellent player," said a player from Sivasagar, Assam.

For some of these players their goal in life, as on the field, is to excel and make a mark at the national and international level.

The potential of the North East and its amazing talent in sports is gradually being noticed both on and off the field. By Peter Alex Todd (ANI)
