Bathinda (Punjab) Aug 11 (ANI): India's thrust on infrastructure has opened up new avenues of employment for the skilled and semi-skilled workforce.

Larsen and Toubro ltd (L and T), India's leading infrastructure firm is imparting technical know-how and skills to Punjabi youth to cater to the needs of the expanding infrastructure activities across the country.

Once denied access to employment because of lack of skills, these youth are now all set to contribute their bit in building India's infrastructure.

Over 110 young people from the Malwa region are being trained at L and T's skill-training center at Abul Khurana near Bathinda.

The 'Construction Skills Training Centre' specializes in imparting training in buildings, construction, roads, bridges and other spheres of infrastructure development.

Arvind Singh, Principal, Construction Skills Training Institute, said, "After three months of academic training, the boys work at a site for another three months to be proficient in their work. Then they can apply for a job in a domestic or an international firm, wherever they get a better opportunity. To impart skill training to unemployed youth is the aim of Punjab government. The project helps to make youth capable of working in any multinational company, government or private sector.

While the Punjab government has provided basic infrastructure for housing and running of this institute, L and T provides vocational and technical education to the youth free of cost.

After completing the course at five such centers across India, over 80,000 persons have got jobs and are working as masons, bar benders steel fixers and carpenters.

'We don't get such training at any other institute. Here, they give us complete technical as well as academic knowledge. That's why I have joined," said Rakesh Kumar, a trainee.

The center is a great effort by the L and T Ltd, in collaboration with the Punjab government to create skilled manpower in building world-class infrastructure. By Avtar Gill (ANI)
