Oman Experiencing Fluctuations in Economy
Oman refused to become a port for accepting arms and slaves in the middle of the 19th century and it seemed to doom their economy for some time. The prosperity that they had in the past was removed and they had to turn to other means to create revenue.
Although the economy might have gone through rough times, it did perk up once they changed their outlook and worked on making other industries more effective and prosperous. Over the last 40 years, they have made a dramatic change for the better with their oil and gas industries as well as the petroleum sector. Other industries that they have include traditional handicrafts, fishing, camel and goat herding, and agriculture.
Over the years, even though the country has had great growth and development in various industries, they have experienced fluctuations within their economy. While the oil production certainly added a lot to their growth, the oil production were reduced due to the depletion of the oil in certain reserves. This was made up for in the following years so that when the oil prices lowered, Oman was able to recover some of those losses by increasing production from reserves that were not depleted. By year 2000, the growth was still increasing but for the next six years would reduce in size once again.
With all of these changes within the industry, the country has had both good times and bad. They don't have the same size resources as some of their neighbors have which means that they need to use management skills in how quickly they use the resources and where the revenues are allocated. The geography of the location can make exploration quite expensive as well.
At the moment, the government is making plans to modernize the country. This is to make recovery of their economy a little easier and faster. It also may help to reduce the level of fluctuations experienced.
