Pak to finalise draft of Hindu Marriage Bill next month

Islamabad, Tue, 30 Oct 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Oct. 30 (ANI): The draft of the Hindu Marriage Bill is likely to be finalized by next month, during a conference by Pakistan's Ministry of Human Rights.

A delegation of Pakistan's Scheduled Caste Rights Movement met Adviser to Prime Minister on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and apprised him about the problems they face due to the non-registration of their marriages, upon which Khokhar said that in mid-November, a conference would be called to settle the differences of the stakeholders of Hindu Marriage Bill and to finalise the draft, reports The News.

For the past 66 years, Hindu women in Pakistan have been suffering due to the absence of any law for protection of their matrimonial rights, the delegation stated.

It has been a year since the Federal Ministry shared the draft of Hindu Marriage Act 2011 with different stakeholders. However, due to certain differences among the Hindu community, the draft was never finalised and the community still awaits the legislation so that their marriages can be recognised and registered, the paper said.
