Mayor of South Delhi, Savita Gupta attended ICLEI (Internation Council for Local Environmental Initiatives) Summit on "Cities for Life: City and Sub-national Biodiversity: in Hyderabad. The Summit was organized by ICLEI in partner with Govt. of India, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
In the Summit, Mayor highlighting the challenges of the Civic Bodies of Metro Cities said that due to migration of people from villages and small towns to the cities, pressure is building up on the local bodies to provide proper civic amenities to the increasing population which often results in loss of greenery, cutting of trees and utilization of agriculture land for construction of buildings etc.
Mayor expressed her views and said that the process also leads loss of water bodies such as Ponds, Lakes and contamination of water. Delhi has its own water bodies and with emphasis/public awareness about the rainwater harvesting, the city would have lesser dependence on the States like Haryana and U.P. for supply of drinking water.
She appealed to the citizens to protect Nature – Community public participation is urgently required and the citizens have to play a major role in conservation and development of greenary and water bodies in the metropolitan cities. Water harvesting is the need of the hour and we are associating RWAs for public awareness and promoting the concept of rainwater harvesting. Likewise the local administration should use solar energy for Advertisement boards on the roads & streetlights etc.
