Union Cabinet approves Ordinance to provide stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape

New Delhi, Apr 21 (ANI) The Union Cabinet has approved an Ordinance to award death sentence to the rapists of children below the age of 12 on Saturday. Minimum 20 years’ imprisonment or life imprisonment for rape of a girl under 12 years has been provided in the Ordinance. The Centre has also approved the Ordinance to provide stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape of girls below 16 years of age. Union Cabinet also decided to put in place measures for speedy investigation and trial of rape cases. The government cleared the amendment in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In case of rape of a girl under 16 years, minimum punishment has increased from 10 years to 20 years, extendable to life imprisonment. The new Ordinance has come in the backdrop of the rape and murder case of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and another rape incident of a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao.
