Tibetans celebrate Panchen Lama's 29th birthday in Dharamsala
Dharamsala (HP), Apr 25 (ANI): Tibetan community in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamsala on Wednesday celebrated the 29th birthday of the second-most powerful figure in Tibetan Buddhism, Panchen Lama, who disappeared 20 years ago at the age of six. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who was appointed as the 11th Panchen Lama by the 14th Dalai Lama, 'disappeared' on May 17, 1995. Tibetan activists said that he has been kept at a secret location by the Chinese government ever since and Gyaincain Norbu is appointed as the new Panchen Lama. Many Tibetans spurn the Chinese-appointed Panchen Lama as fake. Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, hoped that the Panchan Lama receives proper education and other facilities albeit in captivity. Traditionally, high lamas, Buddhist priests, can take years to identify a child deemed to be a reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, a search usually limited to Tibet.
