Thyroid dysfunction leads to diabetes during pregnancy, says study

New Delhi, Jun 08 (ANI): As per a recent study, thyroid dysfunction can lead to diabetes during pregnancy. Thyroid dysfunction that is common among women during pregnancy has been associated with premature births, miscarriages and other adverse outcome in children’s health. According to senior author of the study, Cuilin Zhang, thyroid abnormalities in the first half of the pregnancy can result in short and long-term health problems for women and their children. The case-control study conducted by researchers of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) carried out an assessment of the medical records of 107 women suffering from gestational diabetes as well as 214 other pregnant women. It was found that higher thyroid hormone levels served as an indicator of the risk of gestational diabetes starting early in pregnancy. The research, therefore, supports the benefits of thyroid screening among pregnant women during the early to mid phase of pregnancy.
