Teachers allegedly beat up students for demanding midday meal in Jharkhand

Koderma, July 05 (ANI): Furious parents of school children, allegedly beaten up by teachers in Koderma district of Jharkhand demanded the closure of the institution. The parents alleged that the children were beaten up after they complained about the irregular service of midday meal at the school. The midday Meal Scheme is a school meal programme of the Indian government designed to improve the nutritional status of school-age children nationwide. It gives more than 100 million school children a free lunch and has been widely lauded as one of the most successful welfare measures in India. Parents gathered outside the school and sought removal of the accused teachers. The students said that they were chased and beaten up by the teachers. The school has been shut ever since the incident. Official of the education department said that the matter was under investigation. The midday meal scheme draws a lot of support from non-governmental organisations, rights activists and the United Nations.
