Pranab Mukherjee, Ansari along others pay homage to Pandit Nehru on his 51st death anniversary

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari and political leaders on Wednesday paid homage to the nation's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 51st death anniversary. The commemoration took place at Nehru's memorial in New Delhi. Mukherjee laid a floral wreath on his memorial along with Ansari. Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other party leaders were also present and laid wreath at the memorial. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too paid his tributes to Pandit Nehru on his death anniversary. "Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his Punya Tithi. We remember his contribution as a freedom fighter and as our first Prime Minister," the Prime Minister said. Nehru was independent India's first and longest serving Prime Minister from August 15, 1947 to May 27, 1964. A pivotal figure during India's independence movement, Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh. His birthday is celebrated as Children's Day in India.
