Opposition parties slam government for meager farmer compensation

Srinagar/ New Delhi, June 3 (ANI): The Congress on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to care about the farmers of the country, after they received compensation as low as 47 rupees from the central government for the losses suffered in last year's floods. Congress leader Salman Soz, said that the central government was only paying lip-service and lacked reality. Meanwhile, PDP spokesperson Abhijeet Jasolia, said that the previous Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and the then ruling National Conference government in the state were to be blamed for the compensation amount. Some blamed the state's ruling Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government for being insensitive towards the farmers. Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson, Nalin Kohli, assured the matter to be examined. The government released cheques of 47 rupees, 80 rupees, 94 rupees, 113 rupees and 378 rupees as compensation for crops damaged in September 2014. The farmers have refused to accept the compensation, calling it a mockery of their loss and threatened to protest.
