Kathmandu residents awake to the aftermath of Saturday s powerful earthquake
Kathmandu, April 26 (ANI): Residents in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu awoke on Sunday to the devastation wrought by a powerful earthquake that hit the day before.
Authorities scrambled to provide shelter in Kathmandu for thousands of people who spent the night outside in freezing temperatures and patchy rain, too afraid to return to their damaged homes. Local television broadcast pictures of people carrying blankets, bags and pillows as they walked along the city's streets on Sunday. The 7.9 magnitude quake struck at midday on Saturday at a busy time of year for the tourism-reliant nation's trekking and climbing season, with an estimated 300,000 foreign tourists in the country.
Nepal's Home Ministry put the death toll at 1,805, with about 4,700 injured.
