Indian army to take PM Modi's cleanliness campaign to Mount Everest

New Delhi, April 02 (ANI): Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clean India Mission, a mountaineering team of the Indian army is set to leave for world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, to mark country’s 50th expedition anniversary to the mountain. The expeditioners will also be making the surroundings of the mountain free of non-biodegradable waste and aware people about the importance of protecting the environment. Speaking at the expedition’s flag off ceremony ‘Indian Army Everest Massif Expedition 2015’ in New Delhi, Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag expressed confidence in the 34-member team. The selection for the expedition kicked off last year in December in Himachal Pradesh in pre-mountaineering camps. Five members of the team will also participate in the annual Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon (THEM), world’s highest marathon. The mountaineers will also scale the fourth highest peak, Mount Lhotse. The Clean India Mission was launched on the birthday of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi on October 02 last year. It aims at making people aware about the link between sanitation and public health.
