Human Rights Violations Go Unabated in Gilgit Baltistan

Gilgit Baltistan, July 07, 2015:- As Human Rights violations go unabated in Pakistan’s occupied region of Gilgit-Baltistan, the perpetrators go scot-free due to faulty judicial system in the region. There has been no end to human rights violations by Pakistani security agencies in Gilgit-Baltistan. The perpetrators often go unpunished due to lack of an effective judicial system. The region has a separate court system. Under Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order 2009, Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court was established with a chief justice and two other judges. But they are appointed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. As the appointments of the judges for these courts are allegedly done on political consideration, their decisions are often politically motivated. Security agencies often resort to harsh measures to prevent journalists from reporting cases of gross violations of human rights. The police act as a mute spectator to the killings of innocent civilians. The non-state actors, backed by the Inter-Services Intelligence, often target and persecute the Shia community. But the police choose to remain silent.
