Government-owned apricot processing unit provides employment to youth

Kargil (J&K), Oct 01 (ANI): In a first of firsts, a government-owned apricot fruit processing unit has generated employment in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. Apricots are the main fruit trees in Kargil district and are widely grown. Apricots that grow in Kargil district are highly perishable within the short summer season. Therefore, the fresh fruits need to be transported to the markets soon after the harvesting. In order to boost the growth of this fruit and generate more employment in the district, a processing unit has been started. Scores of educated unemployed youths of the district have got direct employment from this processing unit. The primary focus of this first cooperative society unit is to is to provide training to the rural girls and boys in fruit processing by organising them into self help groups to process the organically grown apricots and sea buckthorn into jams, juices and pulps.
