German Defence Minister visits Gandhi Museum in Delhi

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): German Defence Minister Ursula Von der Leyen visited Gandhi Smriti, a museum dedicated to iconic Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi, on Wednesday. She was accompanied by German ambassador to India, Michael Steiner. The museum is also the location where Gandhi spent last 144 days of his life and where he was assassinated on January 30, 1948. A pillar called ‘Martyr’s column’ marks the spot where his killer, Nathuram Godse, shot him. The museum is also home to Gandhi’s relics as well as photographs and pictures. During her three-day visit, Von der Leyen will call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also address a gathering of German students. Leyen arrived in the national capital on Tuesday and visited war memorial Amar Jawan Jyoti and paid tribute to the fallen soldiers. Later, she was accorded guard of honour. Reportedly, Von der Leyen also held bilateral talks with her Indian counterpart Manohar Parrikar to deepen defence ties.
