Floods in Imphal force villagers into relief camps

Imphal (Manipur), Jun 17 (ANI): Floods triggered by incessant rains in Manipur’s Imphal submerged villages, washed away crops, destroyed roads and forced people to move into relief camps. Torrential rain in the last days overwhelmed water bodies, with water making its way among the houses and on the roads. Many people have been rendered homeless with low lying areas being submerged under water. People were seen making their way through the inundated areas by walking in knee-deep waters and carrying their belongings on makeshift rafts. Authorities have asked the army and police to step in and help in rescue operations and evacuate the victims to safer places. Food packets, drinking water and medication are being provided to the displaced people. Around 100 relief camps have been currently set up in five districts of the Manipur state to provide immediate relief. Flooding is an annual problem during the monsoon season in South Asia, but the impact is worsened by crumbling civic infrastructure, clogged drains and uncontrolled urban expansion.
