Flood situation grim in eastern and northeastern India

Jalpaiguri, Sep 01 (ANI): Flood situations remained grim in eastern and northeastern India as river water flew above danger mark which ravaged several villages. At least 100 villages in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal have been inundated after an embankment collapsed on the Teesta River due to heavy rainfall in the area. As the water levels increased in Teesta river, water entered the houses near the embankment, and led to the damage and destruction of many huts. On Monday, (National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams pressed into action to move villagers to safer areas. The government had set up relief camps, with supply of food and medicines, across the state where affected residents were seeking shelter. Meanwhile in Dibrugarh district of Assam, water entered camps of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as the river Brahmaputra continued to flow above the danger level. Nearly 600,000 people have been affected by floods in Assam. The districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Barpeta, Jorhat, Baska, Sonitpur and Dibrugarh are among the worst affected. Annual monsoon season is vital for India as half of its cropland lacks irrigation. But excessive rains cause many problems such as floods, landslides and water-borne diseases.
