Farmers blame sugar factory for water pollution in Solapur

Solapur, July 29 (ANI): Farmers of Madra village in Solapur district accused administration of turning a deaf ear to their repeated pleas to check water pollution in the area. The households in Madra village have been receiving polluted yellow-coloured water from the last three years. The residents attributed the source of pollution to the nearby Shrideshwar Sugar factory. It has been alleged that the administration failed to act against the sugar factory despite repeated complaints. Not only is the water unfit for drinking, but it has also affected the crops. Sugarcane is the most water-intensive crop grown in Maharashtra's Solapur. The district has the highest number of sugar factories in the state. An alarming 80% of India's surface water is polluted, a latest assessment by WaterAid, an international organization working for water sanitation and hygiene, showed.
