Authorities launch Ramadan helpline for fasting Muslims in Kashmir

Srinagar/ Surat, July 01 (ANI): The government of Jammu and Kashmir has launched a special helpline for the fasting Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan. A special department has been set up by the state police to attend to emergency calls. People can also text their grievances through SMS or WhatsApp. The issues of frequent power cuts, water shortage, sanitation, health, black marketing would be taken up on urgent basis. Senior superintendent of police of Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain said the helpline has been launched for the convenience of the people. Ramadan, which began on June 19 this year, is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar and traditionally a time of religious fervour, settling old disputes and performing charitable deeds towards the less fortunate. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The holy month commemorates the revelation of Koran, Islam's holy book. The government initiative has been welcomed by the locals. Meanwhile, hundreds of people flocked a Ramadan fair in Surat.
