Introduction about Jantar Mantar of Delhi:

Jantar Mantar of Delhi is an astronomical observatory built in 1724 by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in Delhi and 4 other cities of India on the advise of Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. Jantar Mantar means instrument for calculation and has instruments that can graph the path of the astronomical universe. Brief History of Jantar Mantar Delhi:

Delhi Jantar Mantar was built in 1724 A.D. It is made of red sandstone and has 13 architectural astronomy instruments.

Muhammad wanted to revise the calendar and astronomical tables and to predict the times and movements of the sun, moon and planets. For this he asked Jai Singh who was a great astronomer and mathematician to built an astronomical observatory instrument.

5 observatories were built during 1724 to 1734 throughout India in Delhi, Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain and Mathura.

Yantras like Samrat Yantra, Jai Prakash, Ram Yantra, Niyati Chakra and Misra Yantra are present in the vicinity.

Samrat Yantra was used as an equal hour sundial to measure the time of the day.

Jai Prakash Yantra consists of two concave hollowed out hemispheres which determine the position of the sun and other celestial bodies.

Ram Yantra consists of two large buildings and was used to measure the altitude of stars or other celestial bodies.

Mishra Yantra used to indicate the position of the sun. The two pillars near it used to determine the longest and the shortest days of the year.
