He was the captain who brought back Indian team together after it fell in the midst of match fixing. He also took India to win overseas consistently, which was not seen in previous captains.

He is considered as an aggressive ODI captain. Under his captaincy India reached to 2003 World Cup final but lost to Australia. Wisden ranked him 6th greatest ODI batsmen of all time. He received Padma Shri in the year 2004.

He is married to Dona Ganguly and has one daughter Sana Ganguly. He is currently playing for Pune Warriors in IPL 2012
