He married thrice, first to Marie Dominique Culioli in 1982 and divorced her in 1996. They had two childrens Ajaccio and Jean. Then he married Cecilia Ciganer Albeniz in 1996 and divorced her in 2007. They had one son Louis. At present he is married to Carla Bruni, they got married in 2008 and have a daughter Giulia.

He has been awarded Knight of Legion of Honour in 2004 and Grand Cross of Legion of Honour in 2007.
